Children play by a gas lamp in the foreground — one girl skipping, another watching — while elegantly dressed women browse the warmly lit shopfront with its colourful display of sweets and confections. Flower boxes adorn the upper windows and hollyhocks bloom beside the entrance. A lively and tender portrayal of everyday Victorian street life.
