H Kemps Book Seller
Date unknown
Oil on canvas
A richly atmospheric Victorian street scene depicting H. Kemp Bookseller at number 32. Three figures - a woman in red browsing outside, a maid in the doorway, and a mother with child - are bathed in the warm glow of the illuminated shop window, packed with rows of books. A superb example of Jones trompe-l oeil approach to nostalgic English street life. Previously sold through the Halcyon Gallery, London.
